Lead in Water: Why Your Home’s Plumbing Matters
Water can pick up lead after it leaves the utility. Here’s how service lines, fittings and fixtures affect the water you drink—and how to choose a next step.

The last stretch of pipe matters
A utility report describes its monitoring. Water still travels through a service line and your home’s plumbing before it reaches the glass. Older pipes, solder, fittings and fixtures can be sources of lead.
That makes lead different from a taste complaint. Clear water can contain lead, so appearance is not a useful check.
Start with the service line and fixtures
Ask your utility what it knows about the service line to your property. Then consider the age and materials of the household plumbing. Recent work on the line is also worth mentioning when you ask about testing.
Use cold water for drinking and cooking. Hot water can pick up more lead from plumbing, and boiling does not remove lead.
Get a result from the right faucet
If lead is the concern, use a laboratory that tests for it and follow the collection instructions. Sampling details matter because water that has stood in pipes can give a different result from water after flushing.
A hardness test, chlorine strip or TDS meter does not identify lead. Tell the laboratory which faucet you use for drinking water.
Treatment at the point you drink
A point-of-use filter with a verified lead-reduction claim is one way to reduce lead in drinking water. Some RO systems have that claim as well. Check the exact model and its replacement schedule.
If lead is released inside household plumbing, treating the drinking-water faucet puts a treatment stage after that plumbing. Service-line and plumbing replacement address the source.
Bring the facts to the conversation
Have your utility name, service-line information and any test results ready. Decide which taps supply drinking water and how much your household uses.
