Is Softened Water Safe to Drink? Sodium, Potassium, and RO Explained
For most healthy adults, properly treated water from a conventional softener is generally suitable for drinking. The important detail is that ion-exchange softening replaces calcium and magnesium with sodium or potassium, so the mineral profile changes.

What happens during ion-exchange softening
Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium. In a sodium-regenerated softener, the resin captures those hardness ions and releases sodium ions in exchange. In a potassium-regenerated system, potassium ions perform the exchange.
The finished water is softer because calcium and magnesium have been removed. It is not "salt water." Sodium chloride used during regeneration is rinsed from the resin before the unit returns to service, but the ion exchange leaves additional sodium in the treated water.
NSF/ANSI 44 is the principal standard for residential cation-exchange softeners. How much sodium does softening add?
A commonly used estimate is about 8 milligrams of sodium per liter for each grain per gallon of hardness removed.
For example, if incoming water is 7 grains per gallon and the softener removes all of it:
- 7 x 8 mg/L = about 56 mg/L of added sodium
- One 8-ounce glass is about 0.237 liter
- 56 mg/L x 0.237 = about 13 mg of added sodium per glass
That is an estimate, not a laboratory result. The water may already contain sodium before treatment, and the exact exchange can vary.

Add point-of-use reverse osmosis
A properly maintained RO system can reduce dissolved solids, including much of the sodium, at a dedicated drinking-water faucet. Look for the exact model's NSF/ANSI 58 certification and specific reduction claims.
RO is usually a point-of-use decision. It does not need to supply showers, toilets, or the entire house to provide drinking and cooking water.
Use potassium chloride
Potassium chloride can regenerate many softeners, but it is not automatically the right choice for a sodium-restricted household. Potassium can be a serious concern for people with kidney disease or those taking certain medications. It is also generally more expensive and may require different programming.

Does softened water taste salty?
Properly operating softened water should not taste like brine.
